WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -Purdue University is suspending all university-sponsored student travel to international locations over the upcoming spring break period. This includes international study abroad and service-learning trips, as well as international travel planned by official Purdue student organizations. All such domestic programs are currently moving forward as planned.
This decision is consistent with new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in light of the continuing spread of the novel coronavirus and was made out of an abundance of caution. This new travel suspension is in addition to Purdue’s ongoing suspension of all university-sponsored travel to countries with a CDC travel advisory of level 2 or above due to COVID-19 (China, Iran, Italy, Japan and South Korea).
ALSO NEW: In accordance with CDC guidelines, those who choose to travel to countries with a CDC level 3 travel advisory for coronavirus must self-quarantine for 14 days and must seek an assessment with a health care provider before returning to campus. Those traveling from a level 2 country are advised that 14-day self-quarantine is recommended. Travelers should also note that the possibility exists that a country experiencing an outbreak could suspend travel in and out of the country and could result in travelers being stranded.
“We understand that the decision to suspend international spring break travel will be a relief to some and disappointing to others. As always, this decision was guided by our top priority of the health and safety of our Purdue community,” said Purdue Provost Jay Akridge.
The university is working on a reimbursement protocol for those affected by the study abroad travel suspension. The details of that process are being finalized; further information will be communicated with affected individuals directly.
Additionally, the Office of the Provost and the colleges are working to assist students in finding academic programs to make up any credits lost due to the cancellation of study abroad programs.
All Purdue faculty, staff and students planning personal travel over the spring break period to any international location are urged to pay close attention to the CDC travel health notice information being released about destination countries, and updates from air carriers prior to departure and while abroad.
