Chandra P. Belani
International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer appointed Chandra P. Belani, MD, as its new chief science officer.
Belani will direct and support the association’s scientific strategy. His oversight areas will include scientific research projects, publications, educational offerings for members and educational content for conferences.
“Dr. Belani joins the [association] at an exciting time both for the organization and the field,” Dave Mesko, CEO of International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), said in a press release. “Chandra has established himself as a leader in the field, and his expertise will guide and further shape our scientific projects and programming, ensuring that the IASLC remains at the forefront of the thoracic oncology field.”
Belani is professor of medicine in the division of hematology/oncology at Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. He previously served as deputy director of Penn State Cancer Institute and director of the lung cancer program at Penn State College of Medicine, as well as director of community oncology and co-director of the lung cancer program at University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute.
“At the IASLC, the chief science officer position provides me with a unique opportunity to give, contribute and grow the organization,” Belani said in the release. “I am embarking on this challenge with the spirit of dedication, inspiration and motivation to improve the quality of the educational, research and scientific programs in collaboration with IASLC members worldwide. In my role as [chief science officer], I hope to develop a cohesive communications plan and ensure that the information released is consistent with the strategy at large, and work toward the ultimate goal of improving lung cancer outcomes.”
